Quali war spannend, hat Spaß gemacht, zu sehen, was aus dem Auto rauszuholen ist. Habe dann für das Rennen die Gänge geändert, im Nachhinein betrachtet eine schlechte Entscheidung, im Rennen hat sich alles falsch angefühlt und ich habe mich innerhalb der ersten 10 Kurven gedreht. Das hat dann wohl mental was bei mir gemacht, da aus Spaß so ein bisschen Frustratiion wurde. Im Quali dachte ich mir, dass ich nur aus Spaß teilnehme und dabei alles rausholenj und einfach Spaß beim Fahren haben will, war im Rennen nicht mehr so. Habe mir dann die linke vordere Aufhängung beschädigt und konnte nicht mehr in Rechtskurven einlenken, bald darauf kam ein kapitaler Fehler. Glückwunsch an Greg, Mario und Ferdi für die Podestplätze, war auch dieses Jahr wieder nicht einfach
Until the practice race, I never thought I might win at Targa Florio with Gentlemen´s League. This league was the only league I thought had more experience at Targa than I did. This year I started thinking I may have driven this track in GPL more than anybody, and I have probably driven it at race speeds more than Nino Vaccarella did. I have driven at least several laps every year since 2011. I´ve spent time every year since 2017 learning to drive 2 or 3 new cars here. And I have done a lot driving at Targa over the last month. I learned to drive the 1969 Brabham BT26, GT40 Mk2B, and the Brabham BT24.
I admire the tenacity of the other finishers. This is only the second time I have finished and I had to stop at my pit stall to finish the first time. I tried to drive a little easy this time so I might finish. I did not worry much about my speed. I concentrated on driving the best line I could. I also thought I should not try to drive any faster than 34:10, thinking that might get me to the finish line. Being faster than 34:10 with little to no drama was very pleasing. I drove better than I thought I would or could drive.
Winning my first race with Geli and now winning at Targa has made this a great season for me. I never expected I might do this with the Brabham. I think my odds would have been much better in the Ferrari.

Bis zum Trainingsrennen hätte ich nie gedacht, dass ich bei der Targa Florio mit der Gentlemen's League gewinnen könnte. Diese Liga war die einzige Liga, von der ich dachte, dass sie mehr Erfahrung mit der Targa hat als ich. In diesem Jahr begann ich zu denken, dass ich diese Strecke in der GPL vielleicht öfter gefahren bin als jeder andere, und ich bin sie wahrscheinlich öfter im Renntempo gefahren als Nino Vaccarella. Seit 2011 bin ich jedes Jahr mindestens einige Runden gefahren. Seit 2017 habe ich jedes Jahr Zeit damit verbracht, 2 oder 3 neue Autos hier fahren zu lernen. Und in den letzten Monaten bin ich viel bei der Targa gefahren. Ich habe gelernt, den 1969 Brabham BT26, den GT40 Mk2B und den Brabham BT24 zu fahren.
Ich bewundere die Hartnäckigkeit der anderen Finisher. Es ist erst das zweite Mal, dass ich ins Ziel komme, und beim ersten Mal musste ich an meinem Boxenstopp anhalten, um ins Ziel zu kommen. Diesmal habe ich versucht, ein wenig ruhiger zu fahren, um vielleicht ins Ziel zu kommen. Ich habe mir keine großen Gedanken über meine Geschwindigkeit gemacht. Ich habe mich darauf konzentriert, die beste Linie zu fahren, die ich fahren konnte. Ich dachte auch, dass ich nicht versuchen sollte, schneller als 34:10 zu fahren, weil ich dachte, dass ich damit vielleicht ins Ziel komme. Schneller als 34:10 zu sein, und das mit wenig bis gar keinem Drama, war sehr erfreulich. Ich bin besser gefahren, als ich dachte, dass ich fahren würde oder könnte.
Dass ich mein erstes Rennen mit Geli gewonnen habe und jetzt auch noch bei der Targa siege, hat diese Saison für mich zu einer großartigen gemacht. Ich hätte nie erwartet, dass ich das mit dem Brabham schaffen würde. Ich denke, meine Chancen wären im Ferrari viel besser gewesen.

For myself I lost focus in L3 first quarter. Got stuck in the barrier in a sharp righthander - even under no pushed conditions.. Had one lap of preparation, thanks to Ferdi enough fuel.. I know the track well from last years race and some other years ago. Just came back from 2 weeks holiday and could not get my tension into race-mode. Brain and body was still to lazy :)
I had a sloppy and careless "qualy" (i.e. reconnaissance) -lap and crashed out pretty early. So.. not much learning this year, I guess. I didn't like how careless I was - this mental state wasn't very promising for the race.... And I was very tired from little sleep throughout the week.
Anyways, there goes the starter flag... It wasn't easy getting into a rhythm with "nervous" Albrecht around... :P Once I was alone, I could start with "getting into the game & track". But already in lap 1 I started to get cross-eyed from sleepiness... :o :D A few wall-slaps & damage in that lap.
Lap 2 was really a cool drive. Amazing how much a brain can recall after months and months. I really felt like I "know" the track. I had a good time.
Lap 3 I think exhaustion kicked in and it was a pretty botched up lap with a few occasions that could've/should've ended my race............ but didnt! :D Towards the end it even felt like I had brake failure. I couldn't slow down well and had a few crashes which again could've been a "silly & unnecessary" end just a few kilometers short of the finish line... ayayay....
But yes: it's amazing but I eventually made it to the checkered!!! (sorry for the waiting ;) :D ) It's always special and it always means a lot. Especially with the Lotus and its fragile engine (I never exceeded 9300rpm though) [Crossing the s/f line starting lap 3 I mixed up the button to raise the arm with the button of the clutch and revved up the engine! You can imagine how (stupid) I felt like I just killed my engine/race then and there... :O :D ]

Soweit würde ich für mich nicht gehen, ich habe nur meine übliche Taktik angewendet - früh aufstehen (senile Bettflucht), dafür zwei Stunden Mittagsschlaf.
I wouldn't go that far for me, I just used my usual tactic - get up early (senile bed escape), take a two hour nap instead.
